To guide community development at Welaunee and ensure protection of a variety of resources, the family adopted these eight design principles:

1. Embrace and protect the adjacent canopy roads

2. Enhance connectivity to and use of the Miccosukee Canopy Road Greenway

3. Create a diversity of land uses reflecting the traditional community patterns of Tallahassee

4. Respect the historical significance of the North Florida quality of life

5. Conserve and utilize natural features of the site, including wetlands, upland vegetation, steep slopes, ravines and floodways

6. Integrate natural and built environments to create a whole community

7. Design a livable community that enhances th existing beauty of Welaunee

8. Provide leadership in addressing existing neighborhood problems
